LIBRARIES: MORE THAN EVER!
Libraries are branching out further than the printed word. While books are still our bread and butter, some public libraries have decided to be a bit more creative in what they offer. For example, Sudbury Public Library lends out fishing rods and tackle, Toronto Tool Library is offering a wide selection of donated power tools, Edmonton Public Library offers support services to the city's homeless and Kitchener Public Library recently began to loan mobile wi-fi hotspots to their library card holders. Academic libraries are taking the lead on research data management, journal impact measures, open access and other ways to engage researchers and students, and are bringing puppies into the library to help students with exam stress. Libraries really are doing “more than ever.” And in these times of economic and social crisis, libraries are truly needed more than ever!
