Staying at Jasper Park Lodge
Staying at the Jasper Park Lodge is an exceptional experience. The JPL staff do their utmost to welcome our delegates to this extraordinary hotel.
Your Room
To keep costs down for delegates, the ALC Planning Committee does its best to secure as many rooms as possible at the Fairmont Rate. This rate sells out first. You can also stay at the Lodge for a special reduced pre-conference and post-conference rate for Wednesday and Sunday nights; this rate does not include meals. Check with the Lodge for availability and room rates.
Room Amenities
All rooms will have an iron, ironing board, hairdryer, mini-fridge, kettle, teapot, coffee maker and makings for tea and coffee. If you want ice, dial 55 and a nice young person will deliver it to your door. They can also deliver liquor between 10:00 am and 2.00 am.
The room-service menu is in your room. Of course, you can also bring your own snacks and supplies. A copy of the Edmonton Journal will be hung on your door in the early hours of the morning. The Globe and Mail arrives at the concierge desk around 2:00 pm. Quantities are very limited.
If your room is miles away from the main lodge, dial 55 for a shuttle service. (But you meet some nice people on that stroll to the main lodge, and you work up an appetite!)
Tipping
The conference rate includes gratuities. That being said, if the gang gathers in your room one night and leaves a litter of crumbs trodden into the carpet, showing a little extra appreciation for the cleaning staff would be a nice gesture. (They’re probably putting themselves through college).
Transportation into Town
Most conference attendees never leave the beauty of the Jasper Park Lodge grounds during the whole conference. If you do feel the need to visit Jasper townsite, it’s about a ten minute drive – but you might lose that great parking spot! A taxi into town costs about $25.00.
Meals
If you’re attending the conference alone, or just want to be sociable, watch out for the “Meet New Friends” tables. They will be specially marked with balloons.
The conference package at JPL is built around meals being included with the room rate. If you are staying off site, individual meal tickets can be purchased at the JPL Concierge Desk (inclusive of GST and gratuities).
All three meals may be purchased at the rate of $99 per day, or you can purchase individual meal tickets at the following rates:
-
- breakfast $23
- lunch $24
- dinner $52
Now you know how much those meal tickets are worth – please don’t waste them! Every year a number of MLIS and library tech students come to the conference. They often don’t stay at the lodge and those meal tickets take a big chunk out of a student’s budget, so if you know you won’t be able to use one of your meal tickets, consider passing it on to one of the ALC Planning Committee or leave it at the conference registration desk – we’ll see it goes to a good home.

Internet is complimentary for Fairmont President Club Member in the guest suites (not Fairmont Rooms) and the Lobby area. Wireless is available although is variable in quality. The link for delegates to sign in is: www.fairmont.com/fpc. It is a good reason to join the Fairmont President Club and it is free. Although you can sign up for the President's Club as you check in to the Lodge, in the interests of time and minimizing lineups, it's a far better idea to sign up in advance of your visit.
There is also an Internet Café in the Exhibits Hall, so for a quick check of your email, visit the exhibits and take advantage of the Internet Café.
Business Centre
The Lodge has a full business centre offering photocopying, faxing, computer access etc. It’s open 24/7 and is located on the lobby level of the main Lodge behind the Mary Schaffer ballroom.
Spa
The Fairmont Spa is amazing! You can have everything from a pedicure to reiki or a hot stone massage. They do scrumptious sounding packages too. There is a health club open to hotel guests, featuring a sauna, steam room, exercise room and outdoor heated swimming pool. Maybe you should stay over another day on the conference rate and indulge yourself! President's Club members receive 10% off spa services.
